Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Tiverton
On Tiverton properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Tiverton's wool trade heritage along the River Exe and Grand Western Canal has left disused mill sites where knotweed spreads through the canal towpath's disturbed banks and old lace factory grounds.
