Why Himalayan balsam is a problem in Ystradgynlais
On Ystradgynlais properties, Himalayan balsam fires seed up to seven metres, smothers native bankside vegetation and leaves bare soil that erodes into watercourses each winter. Ystradgynlais sits at the upper end of the Swansea Valley, where former quarry, coal and tinplate land along the River Tawe gave knotweed a stronghold that recurs on disturbed banks toward the Brecon Beacons.
