Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Ystradgynlais
On Ystradgynlais properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Ystradgynlais sits at the upper end of the Swansea Valley, where former quarry, coal and tinplate land along the River Tawe gave knotweed a stronghold that recurs on disturbed banks toward the Brecon Beacons.
