Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Gosport
On Gosport properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Around the harbour and the Haslar peninsula, Gosport's mix of gardens, riverbanks, railway corridors and development plots gives invasive and persistent weeds plenty of disturbed ground to colonise, and infestations regularly cross property boundaries across Hampshire.
