Why couch grass is a problem in Kilkenny
On Kilkenny properties, couch grass white underground stems run right through borders, lawns and vegetable plots, regrowing from every broken piece. In Kilkenny, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam spread along the River Nore and its tributaries, where floods and riverbank works carry rhizome fragments downstream. Verges and green spaces around Kilkenny Castle and St Canice's Cathedral, along with new housing on the edge of town towards Thomastown and Callan, are where we most often find established stands.
