Why cotoneaster is a problem in Lichfield
On Lichfield properties, cotoneaster bird-sown seedlings root into walls, rockeries and chalk banks, and established bushes crowd out native ground flora. Lichfield's Minster Pool and old canal wharves near the Wyrley and Essington Canal offer damp, disturbed banks where knotweed thrives, spreading along the Cathedral city's railway corridors and former gravel workings on its outskirts.
