Why rhododendron ponticum is a problem in Northwich
On Northwich properties, rhododendron ponticum forms dense evergreen thickets, shades out woodland ground flora and harbours Phytophthora pathogens that damage nearby trees. Northwich's salt-mining subsidence flashes and old chemical works along the Rivers Weaver and Dane have created unstable, disturbed ground where Japanese knotweed spreads rapidly along the Trent and Mersey Canal towpaths.
